Parents,
I hope you all had a nice weekend! As a reminder, please make sure to check and initial your child’s agenda daily. Sometimes notes come and you are also aware of your child’s homework. Important Dates: Thursday, October 5-Monday, October 9 - Student Holidays Wednesday, October 18 – Picture Day Spelling: This week we will continue to practice list 2. For extra practice, please visit spellingcity.com and look under Dolvin/Hogan. Our next quiz won’t be until after the break, next week. Grammar: We have started our new unit on Conjunctions & Interjections. For this unit, they’ll need to learn about coordinating, correlative, and subordinating conjunctions, as well as when/how to use them in simple, compound, or complex sentences (6th Grade will also learn about compound-complex sentence structure). We’ll have a unit summative test after Columbus Day. I have put notes on the class website under writing. Writing: This week we will be working on a type of writing called Response to Literature which will be assessed on their novel test Wednesday. This type of writing is when they receive a prompt that pertains to their current novel and have to respond in a formal structure that includes evidence from novel. Friday we copied an outline of the structure and practiced this today and will do so again Tuesday in preparation for the novel test on Wednesday. Reading: On the Launchpad website https://launchpad.classlink.com/fcs there is a link for Fastbridge, your child may use this link for i-ready for additional reading at home. We finished our first novel which was either Old Yeller, Island of the Blue Dolphin, or Call of the Wild depending on your child’s reading level. This week we will continue to learn about common themes in a story and how to write a response to literature. Also, don’t forget to ask your child about the requirements of the monthly Book Log (should be in their binders-new one for October will be passed out Tuesday 10/3). The Book Log should be signed by a parent, and it, along with the completed book review, are due Tuesday, October 31. It will only be accepted if signed by parent so we can make sure the book was read and finished at home. Thank you Chris H. for sending in Hershey’s mini bars!!! Our class is still in need of individually wrapped candy. Any donations would be greatly appreciated!!
