Students will be learning to identify prepositions as well as using them in sentences to expand and modify sentences. They have glued a list of common prepositions in their journals for them to study. Sixth graders will need to be able to classify the phrases as adverbial or adjective phrases. Please see notes in Grammar Notebook. There will be a unit test after the Jekyll trip. Spelling: List 4 will be added to your child’s binder this week. The quiz for List 4 will be after Jekyll. If you feel your child needs more practice, all of their lists have been uploaded into the website spellingcity.com under Hogan. Writing: We are continuing our unit on informative writing. This week we are working on creating engaging titles and leads, using transitions in the body, and writing a good conclusion for an informational piece of writing. Students will be applying these to write an informational paper on their favorite restaurant. Reading: This week we’ll continue reading our Civil War novel either Shades of Gray, Charlie Skeedadle, or Little Women depending on their reading level. For this book, they will keep their notes in their novel folder. This week we will review point of view (1st person, 2nd person, 3rd person limited, and 3rd person omniscient) and types of conflict. We will continue to focus on identifying the main idea in passages. We have passed out the October Book Log. Their class novel can count as one of their two October books if you choose. The Book Log should be signed by a parent, and it, along with the completed book review, are due Tuesday, October 31. It will only be accepted if signed by parent so we can make sure the book was read and finished at home.

For this unit, your child will be learning how to identify and use interjections, coordinating conjunctions, correlative, and subordinating conjunctions. They will also need to be able to identify and write correctly simple, compound, and complex sentences (6th grade=compound-complex sentences). Please see notes in binder. There will be a unit test next week. Spelling: List 3 is in your child’s binder. The quiz for List 3 will be at the end of next week. Students are either reading the novel Shades of Gray, Red Cap or Little Women depending on their reading level. For this book, they will keep their notes in their novel folder. I hope you all had a nice weekend! As a reminder, please make sure to check and initial your child’s agenda daily. Sometimes notes come and you are also aware of your child’s homework. Important Dates: Thursday, October 5-Monday, October 9 - Student Holidays Wednesday, October 18 – Picture Day Spelling: This week we will continue to practice list 2. For extra practice, please visit spellingcity.com and look under Dolvin/Hogan. Our next quiz won’t be until after the break, next week. Grammar: We have started our new unit on Conjunctions & Interjections. For this unit, they’ll need to learn about coordinating, correlative, and subordinating conjunctions, as well as when/how to use them in simple, compound, or complex sentences (6th Grade will also learn about compound-complex sentence structure). We’ll have a unit summative test after Columbus Day. I have put notes on the class website under writing. Writing: This week we will be working on a type of writing called Response to Literature which will be assessed on their novel test Wednesday. This type of writing is when they receive a prompt that pertains to their current novel and have to respond in a formal structure that includes evidence from novel. Friday we copied an outline of the structure and practiced this today and will do so again Tuesday in preparation for the novel test on Wednesday. Reading: On the Launchpad website https://launchpad.classlink.com/fcs there is a link for Fastbridge, your child may use this link for i-ready for additional reading at home. We finished our first novel which was either Old Yeller, Island of the Blue Dolphin, or Call of the Wild depending on your child’s reading level. This week we will continue to learn about common themes in a story and how to write a response to literature. Also, don’t forget to ask your child about the requirements of the monthly Book Log (should be in their binders-new one for October will be passed out Tuesday 10/3).
