Wednesday, January 24 – Lunch Bunch Thursday, Jan. 25-5th Grade Photo (will need to wear jeans- each will receive a free 5th grade shirt on this day) Wednesday, January 31- January Book Log Due Friday, Feb. 2-Newspaper Day (moved due to days off) International Day: Please see separate letter at end of weekly updates below. Newspaper Day: On Friday, Feb. 2, the students will have finished their newspapers they are making in class to go along with our text structure unit. On this day, we will celebrate their hard work by reading each others’ newspapers in our PJ’s while enjoying coffee (hot cocoa) and a doughnut (just like we adults like to do at home)! We’ll also be exploring other news related activities on this day in language arts. We’ll send out a sign-up for supplies later this week. I can’t wait to read all of their newspapers! Grammar: We will continue the unit on verbs and verb tense. This unit will cover action verbs (direct objects and singular/plural spellings), linking verbs, helping verbs, verb phrases, subject-verb agreement, participles, and the 6 tenses (past, present, future, past-perfect, present-perfect, and future-perfect). This week we’ll learn about verb phrases, past/present/future tenses, and participles. The 6th graders will also be learning about transitive/intransitive phrases, predicate nominatives, infinitives, and gerunds. There will be a unit test in a few weeks. Spelling-List 6 will be added to your child’s binder tomorrow for homework. If you feel your child needs more practice, all of their lists have been uploaded into the website https://www.spellingcity.com/users/bfhogan5. Our next quiz will be this Friday, January 26. Writing: We will continue our unit on opinion writing. This week, we’ll be learning about counter-arguments, review how to cite evidence, and review how to write evidence as a direct quote or as paraphrase. Reading: We’ll continue our nonfiction unit in reading that includes text structure and comparing/contrasting historical figures and comparison writing. In this unit, students will be analyzing a biography on either Henry Ford, Amelia Earhart, or Thomas Edison. We will use these books, along with graphic novels, newspapers, and nonfiction articles, to study all the types of text structures and compare/contrast these text structures. All students will have a project that they’ll be working on in class where they’ll create a newspaper using different text structures. They have a project sheet in their binders (due date changed to Friday, Feb. 2). We’ll share these toward the end of the month on a special day we have in Language Arts called Newspaper Day. Sixth graders will also be learning how to analyze a text to determine if it is biased or unbiased and write editorials (argumentative) pieces. Don’t forget the January Book Log! Both 5th and 6th graders will need to read TWO 150-page or more book of their choice for this month. International Day Dear Parents-We need your help!
