Thank you for all those who have already done so!! Dear Parents, 1.) First, a note from Mrs. Zoll: Want to help the Georgia Department of Education see what a fantastic school we have at Dolvin? We need your help! Dolvin has scored 5 out of 5 stars on our climate the last two years. This is a very important part of our CCRPI score that went from to 89 to 97.9!! Please use a computer, tablet, or phone to complete this survey: http://gshs.gadoe.org/parents Let's show the state and Fulton County Schools what a great staff, great students, and learning opportunities we have! Grammar: We will continue working on a large unit on verbs and verb tense. This unit will cover action verbs (direct objects and singular/plural spellings), linking verbs, helping verbs, verb phrases, subject-verb agreement, participles, and the 6 tenses (past, present, future, past-perfect, present-perfect, and future-perfect). The 6th graders will also be learning about transitive/intransitive phrases, predicate nominatives, infinitives, and gerunds. There will be a unit test in a few weeks. Spelling- List 6 was added to your child’s binder last week. If you feel your child needs more practice, all of their lists have been uploaded into the website https://www.spellingcity.com/users/bfhogan5 Writing: We have started our next unit on opinion writing. This week, we’ll work on adding a counter argument when writing an opinion about a given topic. Reading: Before break, we started a new nonfiction unit in reading that includes text structure and comparing/contrasting historical figures and comparison writing. In this unit, students will be analyzing a biography on either Henry Ford, Amelia Earhart, or Thomas Edison. We will use these books, along with graphic novels, newspapers, and nonfiction articles, to study all the different types of text structures and compare/contrast these text structures. All students will have a project that they’ll be working on in class where they’ll create a newspaper using different text structures. They have a project sheet in their binders. I will be taking the class to the computer lab as well for extra time to work on the project. We’ll share these toward the end of the month on a special day we have in Language Arts called Newspaper Day. Sixth graders will also be learning how to analyze a text to determine if it is biased or unbiased. We have passed out the January Book Log. Both 5th and 6th graders will need to read TWO 150-page or more book of their choice for this month. There will be a text structure test this week, Thursday. There are notes on the website and in your child’s reading journal.
