Please help us to remind students that cell phones should be off, and they should not be using their cell phones during class, especially for texting or calling. Grammar: We are wrapping up our first unit which reviewed all 4th grade standards and usage rules for the following: common/proper nouns, singular/plural noun rules, possessive noun rules, action verbs, linking verbs, subjects, predicates, adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns. There will be a classwork grade this week. At the end of this week, we will begin our next unit which covers Commas and Quotes. Spelling: We are still working with spelling list 1. These lists should stay in their binders through the school year. Students will have the quiz on List 1 this Wednesday, August 29th. If you would like for your child to have extra practice with their spelling words, they may use Spelling City website. https://www.spellingcity.com/users/bfhogan5 Writing: We are currently studying the narrative genre. This week we will continue to work on techniques to develop a good introduction including character development, setting development, placement of the conflict, and use transitions words in our writing. We will also work with plot development by using different plot techniques. Reading: This week we are starting our first novel which is either Old Yeller, Call of the Wild, or Island of the Blue Dolphin depending on your child’s reading level. We will be learning about the story elements including the following: protagonist/antagonist, characterization, point of view (1st person, 2nd person, 3rd limited, and 3rd omniscient, 3rd Limited), setting, and identifying types of conflict (person vs. person, person vs. self, person vs. nature, and person vs. society). They will have notes in their novel folder, reading notebook, and reading section of their binder. -Students are responsible for creating a HOTS question for each chapter they read. They will use their HOTS questions to have meaningful discussions with their book clubs. We created flipbooks with HOTS question stems last week. There is also a color coded wheel of question stems on the back of their agenda as well. -Students will be defining vocabulary related to their novel. They need to be studying this vocab, because words will be on comprehension checks as well as the novel quiz/test. -Students have constructed response questions for their books in their novel folder. Students will work on these questions both in class and for homework. We are working with using the TEACH strategy to answer questions correctly and thoroughly. Don’t forget to ask your child about the requirements off the monthly Book Log. The Book Log should be signed by a parent, and it, along with the completed book review, are due Friday, August 31. It will only be accepted if signed by parent so we can make sure the book was read and finished at home.

We had a great first week of school while learning the expectations of 5th grade and having a little fun, too! You will receive a weekly update from both your child’s language arts teacher (me) and their math/science/social studies teacher. Please read these e-mails each week. Thanks!

I hope your students enjoyed their first day back at Dolvin. I can already tell we are going to have an amazing year. Each week I will update a "Weekly Blast" via a blog on my website. We will discuss where to find the weekly blast for each class at Curriculum Night (Mark your calendars for August 21st at 6:30PM). I will send out a direct link in the mean time. You can always find updates and past updates on the "weekly blast" tab. Please make sure you read and review this each week as it contains important information. I try my best to keep it short and sweet :) https://msbhogan.weebly.com/ A few start of term reminders: - Please check your child's agenda NIGHTLY. Teachers will be signing agendas for the first semester to teach responsibility. This is where you will find notes from the teacher, test dates, student homework, etc. I ask that you sign every night so I can make sure it is being shown to parents. - Homework- I will start giving out homework on Wednesday. I did ask that they bring a chapter book from home tomorrow to read in class. - Test Dates- I will send out test dates and changes in my weekly blast. - Quizzes- In 5th grade, quizzes are unannounced. Students are expected to study nightly so they are always prepared. School Dress Code Below is the Dress code as written in the Dolvin Handbook. With summer still very present, I just wanted to remind everyone of the policy. We will give the students reminders about “school clothes” and “play/home clothes” as well. We even use ourselves as examples. (Ms. Pratt has always been tall, so she has always had to buy longer clothes than her friends. Pratt wears different clothes to the park/mall during the summer than she would wear to school.) Thank you for helping reinforce the school dress code with the students. All students shall dress appropriately so as not to disrupt or interfere with the educational program or orderly operation of the school. Extremes in dressing and grooming will not be permitted. Shorts and skirts must meet finger-tip rule and straps must be one inch in width. Bare midriffs, see through clothing, and apparel that designate gangs or similar are not appropriate wear. Flip flops should not be worn to school. On the first violation, the teacher will send a note home to remind the parent and student of the dress code (use standard form). For the second violation, students will be asked to call home for appropriate clothing or borrow from the clinic. Please always feel free to email me! I believe in open communication between parents and teachers and students. I want us all on the same page :). Student Expectations: We keep high expectations for our students at Dolvin and in 5th grade. We will be writing notes in agendas for student successes as well as student mistakes that need to be celebrated or addressed at home. At Dolvin, we have 3 big rules. (attached) Students will learn specific expectations for what these "Big 3" look like throughout the school. If a student fails to meet these expectations, their teacher will make a note in their agenda as a warning. Please note the classroom expectations. (attached) We strongly believe that these expectations are required in order to run a positive classroom environment that is suitable for each students learning needs. When a student exceeds any of these expectations and goes above and beyond to be a role model and make good choices, they will be awarded a splash card! At the end of each month, the grade level with the most splash cards gets a reward.
