Dear Parents-Happy 2nd Week of School! We had a great first week of school while learning the expectations of 5th grade and having a little fun, too! You will receive a weekly update from both your child’s language arts teacher (me) and their math/science/social studies teacher. Please read these e-mails each week. Thanks!
School Behavior Policy This year the school will continue to participate in a behavior plan called Positive Behavior Intervention System (or PBIS for short). Please see your child’s agenda for behavior notes and/or missing work notes. Please sign if you see a note. We’ll go over the steps in this process in more detail at Curriculum Night next week. Important Dates: Tuesday, August 21 – Curriculum Night Friday, August 31-Book Log and Review due (see sheets in binder) Monday, September 3 – Labor Day Grammar: We have started our first unit which will review all 4th grade standards and usage rules for the following: common/proper nouns, singular/plural noun rules, possessive noun rules, action verbs, linking verbs, subjects, predicates, adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns. There will be a classwork grade for an end of unit assessment at the end of next week. Spelling: Wednesday students will be getting their first list of spelling words. These lists should stay in their binders through the school year. Students will have quizzes on the spelling list approximately two weeks after receiving the list. If you would like for your child to have extra practice with their spelling words, they may use Spelling City website. https://www.spellingcity.com/users/bfhogan5 Writing: We have started the year reviewing the rules for Writer’s Workshop and digging into the narrative genre. This week we will learn and work on techniques to develop a good introduction including character development, setting development, and placement of the conflict. Reading: This past week we reviewed the expectations for Reader’s Workshop along with other 5th grade reading expectations, like their Book Logs/Reviews (see example in binder). By next week, we’ll dig into our first novel which is either Old Yeller, Island of the Blue Dolphin, or Call of the Wild depending on your child’s reading level. We will be learning about the story elements including the following: protagonist/antagonist, characterization, point of view (1st person, 2nd person, 3rd limited, and 3rd omniscient), setting, and identifying types of conflict (person vs. person, person vs. self, person vs. nature, and person vs. society). Also, don’t forget to ask your child about the requirements off the monthly Book Log (should be in their binders). The Book Log should be signed by a parent, and it, along with the completed book review, are due Friday, August 31. It will only be accepted if signed by parent so we can make sure the book was read and finished at home.
