Where did time go? This has been a great year so far, and I cannot wait to see what the 2nd semester has in store! I hope you have a wonderful Winter Break. December 18---Book Log Due December 19--- Media Center December 20--- Synonym/Antonym/Homonym Test December 20--- Health Movie- Inside Out. Please return permission slips ASAP December 20--- Winter Party 12:30-1:15 December 21-January 6---Winter Break January 7--- First Day 2nd Semester Spelling: We will pass out list 6 in January after the Winter Break. Grammar: This week we will wrap up our Synonyms, Antonyms and Homonyms unit. For this unit, your child will need to be able to identify and use synonyms, antonyms and homonyms (homographs and homophones) correctly within a sentence. Students will practice using context clues to decipher between the homophones and homographs. Students will also use synonyms and antonyms to decipher analogies. Students will have notes in their binders, their grammar notebooks, and on Google Classroom. The test is Thursday, December 20th. I have decided to move the test to Thursday to allow an extra day to study/prepare. If your student will not be in school, please let me know. Writing: This week we will writing a fun narrative about being stuck in a snow globe. J After the winter break we will begin our Opinion Writing unit. Reading: We wrapped up our non-fiction text structure unit last week. The next unit will be on Folklore. Students will explore the genre of folklore by reading dramas, folktales, myth, fairytales, fables, and legends. We will be working with story elements, comparing and contrasting various story types, and themes. Stay tuned for more information on this unit in January. If you would like extra practice for your child at home, visit the Launchpad website launchpad.fultonschools.org. There are many useful links available. One is a link for i-Ready. Your child may use this link for i-Ready for additional practice at home. Please monitor your child’s monthly Book Log. Students are required to read one, 150 page book in December. The Book Log should be signed by a parent, and it, along with the completed book review, are due Tuesday, December 18th. It must have a parent’s signature to be considered complete. If there is not a signature, it will be considered incomplete and late.

Important Dates: Wednesday, December 12- Text Structure Unit Test Thursday, December 13 – Comparison Essay Test (Informational Writing) Tuesday, December 18 – Book Log Due Thursday, December 20 – Class Holiday Parties Friday, December 21 – First Day of Winter Break (Enjoy 😊) Grammar: Last week we started a new unit relating to building their vocabulary which will include synonyms, antonyms, homophones, and homographs (homonyms). We’ll have this test the last week before Winter Break. Writing: This week we’ll continue to expand on the informational writing unit by learning how to write a comparison essay. We’ll have completed a practice essay (in their Writer’s Notebooks) by tomorrow. On Thursday, we’ll have a comparison writing essay as a test. Reading: We will finish our nonfiction unit in reading that will include text structure this Wednesday. Students took notes on the various types of text structures, these notes are posted to the class website. We have practiced reading passages and determining the text structure used by looking for key words. In this unit, students analyzed a biography on either Henry Ford, Amelia Earhart, Marie Curie, Candy Bombers, or Thomas Edison. We will use these books, along with graphic novels, newspapers, and nonfiction articles, to study all the different types of text structures and compare/contrast these text structures. Sixth graders have learned how to analyze a text to determine if it is biased or unbiased. If you would like extra practice for your child at home, on the Launchpad website https://launchpad.classlink.com/fcs there is a link for i-Ready, your child may use this link for i-Ready for additional reading at home. Important Dates: Dec. 6th First Payment for Jekyll field trip due Dec. 7th Newspaper Day! (Students will get to wear their PJ’s and share their newspapers) Dec. 20th Class Holiday Party Grammar: Due to the ELA conference I attended last week and TAG days, I postponed the preposition test to this Wednesday. Students have learned about prepositional phrases and objects of a preposition, identifying what questions prepositional phrases answer, as well as expand sentences by adding prepositional phrases. Additionally, in this unit, 6th graders will learn the difference between an adverb and preposition and about adverbial/adjective phrases. Students have notes in their grammar notebooks and they will be posted to the class website. Our next unit will be on synonyms/antonyms/homophones/homographs, and we will begin this on Thursday. Writing: This week we will finish the informational genre and moving on to comparison writing. During our reading unit, students read about two inventors. We will be learning how to write a comparison essay using the two inventors they chose. Students will have to explain how either the inventors or inventions are alike and different. Reading: We continue to work on nonfiction unit in reading that will include text structure. This week we will focus on comparing and contrasting two different passages based on their text structure.
