Third Grade News – Week of January 25-29, 2021
It’s that time of year, some students need to replenish pencils and glue sticks. If your child is in need, please send some in with them in the next week if possible. As a reminder, we are not sharing supplies this year. Purple CJ folders- Inside these folders you will find your child's schedule, the classroom expectations, a January calendar, and lined paper. The calendar is used for communication. If your child has a good day, they will receive a stamp daily. Teachers will use the stamps as a class reward system. If the teacher needs to communicate with the parent, the teacher will write in the specific dated box or on the lined paper. These should be coming home daily for you to check. Reading: We are continuing to read the novel Because of Winn Dixie. This Tuesday the students will have a quiz that covers the material we have covered so far. We will also take a closer look at the progression of stories and the role that secondary characters play. Grammar: Last week we introduced possessive nouns. This week we will spend some time reviewing the rules of subject/verb agreement and possessive nouns. A review worksheet will be sent home for homework, this is optional. Then we will assess both of these skills on Friday, January 29 (January 28th for TAG students). Shark group: This week we will review propositional phrases and test Thursday, January 28th. A review worksheet will be sent home for homework, this is optional. Phonics: This week students will learn all about the suffix -ly. We will look at the meaning of this suffix (how something is) and look at how it changes adjectives into adverbs. Shark Group: This week students will be learning the suffixes -ty and -ity. These suffixes refer to the act, process, or condition of something. They change the root word to a noun. Examples: safe, safety, secure-security, able-ability, casual-casualty. Writing: Last week we began our unit on opinion writing. We focused on writing introductions to opinion pieces. This week we will focus on the logical progression of an opinion essay and adding support with details. I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend! Welcome back Face to Face! I’m excited to see everyone after being out of school for a month. 😊 Purple CJ folders- Inside these folders you will find your child's schedule, the classroom expectations, a January calendar, and lined paper. Reading: Last week we started a new novel Because of Winn Dixie. We will continue to read 2 chapters about every day and students will be expected to answer questions regarding the book. We will study the characters in the story and how their actions contribute to the events in the story as well as theme. Students are getting a copy of the questions that cover each chapter. Grammar: Last week we introduced subject/verb agreement. Students have previously learned about subject/predicates and verbs. This week we will be introducing possessive nouns. We will focus on singular possessive nouns this week. A possessive noun is a noun that shows ownership. For example: The dog’s bone. The dog owns the bone and therefore you add an apostrophe and s after the word dog to show ownership of the bone. Another example: The book that belongs to the girl. This would be restated as- The girl’s book. Shark group: Last week we continued with prepositions. This week we will focus on prepositional phrases. A prepositional phrase is a group of words that begins with a preposition. Phonics: This week students will learn the prefix micro-. The meaning of the prefix micro- is extremely small. An example microphone- making a “small” voice loud. This Thursday, January 21, there will be a phonics test. This test will cover this week’s skill and the following: silent consonants; kn, wr, gn, mb, mn, st. Kn- k is silent as in knight, wr- w is silent as in wrist, gn- g is silent as in gnat, mb- b is silent as in comb, mn- n is silent as in hymn, st- t is silent as in listen. The prefixes re-, pre-, and mid-. Re- means to do again, example: reheat- heat again. Pre- means to do before, example: pretest-test before. Mid- means in between, example: midsummer-middle part of summer. Shark Group: This week students will be learning the suffixes -al and -ial. The meaning of these suffixes are relating to process or action. They change the root word to a noun. Examples: nation-national, politic-political, tutor-tutorial, industry-industrial. This Thursday, January 21, there will be a phonics test. This test will cover the following: -er and -or. Example: bake-baker, read-reader, travel-traveler, edit-editor, visit-visitor, act-actor. The following prefixes and suffixes: -en, under, pre, fore, uni, bi, tri, ful, and less. The suffix under-means below and gives a location. Pre-, and fore-, both meaning before, uni- (one), bi- (two), and tri- (three), -en shows an action, ful- means ful of, less means without. Writing: Last week students finished constructed response. We ended the week with a graded constructed response. This week we will begin our unit on opinion writing. Happy New YEAR!!!! I hope you all had a nice winter break. We are welcoming some new students this week to the class. Mrs. Hogan’s class is excited to have you all! Reading: This week will be starting a new novel Because of Winn Dixie. We will read 2 chapters about every day and students will be expected to answer questions regarding the book. We will study the characters in the story and how their actions contribute to the events in the story as well as theme. This week I will post the questions in Seesaw for students to answer. Upon returning to school, students will get a copy of the questions to have. Grammar: Last week we introduced prepositions. This week we are moving on to subject/verb agreement. Students have previously learned about subject/predicates and verbs. These will be review which will help in the understanding that the subject of a sentence must agree with the verb in the sentence. Shark group: Last week we introduced prepositions. We will continue prepositions this week and move into prepositional phrases. Students will learn that a prepositional phrase always starts with a preposition. Phonics: This week students will learn the prefixes re-, pre-, and mid-. A prefix is added to the beginning of a root word and changes the meaning of the word. Re- means to do again, example: reheat- heat again. Pre- means to do before, example: pretest-test before. A suffix is letter, or group of letters, that is added to the end of a. root (base) word and changes the meaning of the root or base word. Students will be expected to explain how a word changes when adding the prefix. Writing: Last week students were introduced to constructed response. Students will be expected to read passages and write a short response about the passage read. We are practicing the strategy to respond which includes restating the question in the answer, citing evidence from the passage, and explaining the evidence.
