Third Grade News – Week of January 11-15, 2021
Happy New YEAR!!!! I hope you all had a nice winter break. We are welcoming some new students this week to the class. Mrs. Hogan’s class is excited to have you all! Purple CJ folders- Inside these folders you will find your child's schedule, the classroom expectations, a January calendar, and lined paper. The calendar is used for communication. If your child has a good day, they will receive a stamp daily. Teachers will use the stamps as a class reward system. If the teacher needs to communicate with the parent, the teacher will write in the specific dated box or on the lined paper. These should be coming home daily for you to check. Reading: This week will be starting a new novel Because of Winn Dixie. We will read 2 chapters about every day and students will be expected to answer questions regarding the book. We will study the characters in the story and how their actions contribute to the events in the story as well as theme. This week I will post the questions in Seesaw for students to answer. Upon returning to school, students will get a copy of the questions to have. Grammar: Last week we introduced prepositions. This week we are moving on to subject/verb agreement. Students have previously learned about subject/predicates and verbs. These will be review which will help in the understanding that the subject of a sentence must agree with the verb in the sentence. Shark group: Last week we introduced prepositions. We will continue prepositions this week and move into prepositional phrases. Students will learn that a prepositional phrase always starts with a preposition. Phonics: This week students will learn the prefixes re-, pre-, and mid-. A prefix is added to the beginning of a root word and changes the meaning of the word. Re- means to do again, example: reheat- heat again. Pre- means to do before, example: pretest-test before. Mid- means in between, example: midsummer-middle part of summer. Shark Group: This week students will be learning the suffixes -er and -or. Example: bake-baker, read-reader, travel-traveler, edit-editor, visit-visitor, act-actor. A suffix is letter, or group of letters, that is added to the end of a. root (base) word and changes the meaning of the root or base word. Students will be expected to explain how a word changes when adding the prefix. Writing: Last week students were introduced to constructed response. Students will be expected to read passages and write a short response about the passage read. We are practicing the strategy to respond which includes restating the question in the answer, citing evidence from the passage, and explaining the evidence. Important Dates to note: January 18- MLK Day NO SCHOOL January 19- Students return to school
