Dear Parents-Thank you so much for attending our Curriculum Night last week! If you have any questions about the Jekyll Trip, please let me know through e-mail.
Class Behavior Policy Please remember to be checking your child’s progress/behavior every day/week in their agendas and sign once a week/day (we are still fine tuning some behaviors to meet 5th grade expectations). Important Dates: Thursday, August 31- Book Log and Review due (NEEDS A PARENT SIGNATURE) Monday, September 4 – Labor Day Friday, September 8- Jekyll Intent Form & First Payment Due Spelling: Our first spelling unit is starting this week. Your child will receive a list of words to study for their formative in about two weeks. They need to keep all lists in their binder the whole year. Grammar: We have completed our first unit which reviewed all 4th grade standards and usage rules for the following: common/proper nouns, singular/plural noun rules, possessive noun rules, action verbs, linking verbs, subjects, predicates, adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns. We are taking the class work grade on these skills this week. Our next unit will be called Commas & Quotes. We’ll start the unit this week and cover all of the comma rules (items in a series, direct address, in an address, in friendly letters, in dates, between city/state, compound sentences, with an appositive, and after introductory word/phrase). Next week, we’ll learn all the rules for writing quotations different ways (whether direct quote or divided quote). We’ll have a unit summative test in about two weeks. Writing: This past week and current week we will continue to work on techniques to write more effective narrative stories. Last week we worked on techniques to develop a good introduction including character development, setting development, and placement of the conflict. This week we’ll work on adding style and clarity to our narratives by adding in transitions, vivid verbs, and specific nouns. Next week we’ll start learning about different plot techniques we can use in our narratives. Reading: This week we are continuing to read our first novel which is either Old Yeller, Island of the Blue Dolphins, or Call of the Wild depending on your child’s reading level. We will be learning about the story elements including the following: protagonist/antagonist, characterization, point of view (1st person, 2nd person, 3rd limited, and 3rd omniscient), setting, and identifying types of conflict (person vs. person, person vs. self, person vs. nature, and person vs. society). Also, don’t forget to ask your child about the requirements off the monthly Book Log (should be in their binders). The Book Log should be signed by a parent, and it, along with the completed book review, are due THIS Thursday, August 31. It will only be accepted if signed by parent so we can make sure the book was read and finished at home.
