Dear Parents-Happy 2nd Week of School! We had a great first week of school while learning the expectations of 5th grade and having a little fun, too! You will receive a weekly update from both your child’s language arts teacher (me) and their math/science/social studies teacher. Please read these e-mails each week. Thanks!
Solar Eclipse – August 21, 2017 Fulton County schools will delay dismissal by 45 minutes on Monday, August 21, 2017, due to the solar eclipse. On that day, we will begin dismissal at 3:05 pm. Students and staff will remain indoors during the scheduled eclipse and participate in eclipse-related learning activities. We will also offer students the opportunity to watch the live stream of the eclipse on www.nasa.gov/eclipselive. If you would like your child to view the eclipse, please plan to check your child out prior to 12:30 pm. Absences and early check-outs on August 21, 2017, will be excused. Please look for more information regarding specific learning opportunities from your child’s teacher. We are asking all parents to complete this quick survey so that our check out process will run smoothly on that day. Please complete one survey for each child if you have multiple students at Dolvin. http://tinyurl.com/DESeclipse School Behavior Policy This year the whole school is participating in a behavior plan called Positive Behavior Intervention System (or PBIS for short). This week we will learn and work on techniques to develop a good introduction including character development, setting development, and placement of the conflict. Reading: This past week we reviewed the expectations for Reader’s Workshop along with other 5th grade reading expectations, like their Book Logs/Reviews (see example in binder). By the end of this week, we’ll dig into our first novel which is either Old Yeller or Call of the Wild depending on your child’s reading level. Next week, we will be learning about the story elements including the following: protagonist/antagonist, characterization, point of view (1st person, 2nd person, 3rd limited, and 3rd omniscient), setting, and identifying types of conflict (person vs. person, person vs. self, person vs. nature, and person vs. society). Also, don’t forget to ask your child about the requirements off the monthly Book Log (should be in their binders). The Book Log should be signed by a parent, and it, along with the completed book review, are due Thursday, August 31. It will only be accepted if signed by parent so we can make sure the book was read and finished at home.
