During this unit, students have learned 3 types of conjunctions (coordinating, correlative, and subordinating), review the types of sentences (simple, compound, and complex), and how to apply the different conjunction to the appropriate uses within those sentences. This week we will be reviewing all conjunctions, the types of sentences, and interjections. I have posted a list of each type of conjunction on the class website. Students will have notes in their binders as well as their grammar notebooks. Spelling: The quiz for list 4 will be Tuesday (tomorrow). Their lists should stay in their binders through the school year. Remember to study both the spelling and the definitions. Students read two similar articles on the same topic, determining the important details, and we will work together to complete a modeled writing based on the articles. This will be kept in their binder as an example exceeding inform writing along with their rubric. Reading: We have started a new nonfiction unit in reading that will include text structure. Students will take notes on the various types of text structures, these notes will be posted to the class website. We will practice reading passages and determining the text structure used by looking for key words. In this unit, students will also be analyzing a biography on either Henry Ford, Amelia Earhart, Marie Curie, Candy Bombers, or Thomas Edison. We will use these books, along with graphic novels, newspapers, and nonfiction articles, to study all the different types of text structures and compare/contrast these text structures. This week we are starting our newspaper project. This project will be done in class and is not be worked on at home. Students will be using information from the books read to write articles using specific text structures. Once completed, we will have Newspaper Day. More will come home on Newspaper Day later. Sixth graders will also be learning how to analyze a text to determine if it is biased or unbiased. Students will take notes on the various types of text structures, these notes will be posted to the class website. We will practice reading passages and determining the text structure used by looking for key words. In this unit, students will also be analyzing a biography on either Henry Ford, Amelia Earhart, Marie Curie, Candy Bombers, or Thomas Edison. As they read each chapter, they’ll be learning how to take notes using a guide called Cornell Notes (these will be in their yellow folders and can be used as a study guide). We will use these books, along with graphic novels, newspapers, and nonfiction articles, to study all the different types of text structures (will have list by tomorrow in binder) and compare/contrast these text structures. Sixth graders will also be learning how to analyze a text to determine if it is biased or unbiased. This week students will begin their newspaper project. Students will be comparing/contrasting the two inventors or their inventions along with writing a chronological article, and a cause/effect article. These will be written here at school. Once completed, we will have Newspaper Day. More information will be coming home about this closer to the date. If you haven’t signed this and returned it, please do so. I do need to have these for all students even if they are not bringing their own device, they all use the class iPad and laptops. This type of writing is when they receive a prompt that pertains to a piece of literature, and they have to respond in a formal structure that includes explanation and evidence from novel. We’ll be copying an outline of the structure and practicing this style this week, and next week. On the novel test they will be given a prompt that applies to their novel, and they will have to write a response to literature essay analyzing the text.. Reading: We concluded our first novel study last week on Old Yeller, Call of the Wild, or Island of the Blue Dolphin depending on your child’s reading level. We will continue reviewing the various story elements found within our novels while reviewing the students Story Elements Project they completed in class. The story elements including the following: protagonist/antagonist, characterization, point of view (1st person, 2nd person, 3rd limited, and 3rd omniscient), setting, and identifying types of conflict (person vs. person, person vs. self, person vs. nature, and person vs. society). We will also continue to practice identifying figurative language within our books. Students will have notes in their novel folder, reading notebook, and reading section of their binder. -Students are responsible for creating a HOTS question for each chapter they read. They will use their HOTS questions to have meaningful discussions with their book clubs. We created flipbooks with HOTS question stems last week. There is also a color coded wheel of question stems on the back of their agenda as well. -Students will be defining vocabulary related to their novel. They need to be studying this vocab, because words will be on comprehension checks as well as the novel quiz/test. -Students have constructed response questions for their books in their novel folder. Students will work on these questions both in class and for homework. We are working with using the TEACH strategy to answer questions correctly and thoroughly.
