Important Dates: October 12 Spirit Day October 17 Picture Retakes October 17 report cards come home October 22-26 IOWA testing Grammar: We began our unit on Conjunctions and Interjections prior to the break. During this unit, students will learn 3 types of conjunctions (coordinating, correlative, and subordinating), review the types of sentences (simple, compound, and complex), and apply the different conjunction to the appropriate uses within those sentences. This week we will be covering subordinating conjunctions and the types of sentences. I have posted a list of each type of conjunction on the class website. Students will have notes in their binders as well as their grammar notebooks. Spelling: List 4 is coming home today with your children. The quiz for list 4 will be in two weeks. Their lists should stay in their binders through the school year. Remember to study both the spelling and the definitions. If you would like for your child to have extra practice with their spelling words, they may use Spelling City website. https://www.spellingcity.com/users/bfhogan5 Writing: We have concluded our unit on how to write a response to literature by writing one on our novel test. Many did fantastic on their first time writing one these essays for a grade! If they missed a few parts, we’ll be reviewing response to literature in every reading unit this year and will continue to grow and master it. This week we’ll start the informational genre by exploring what it is, where/how we use it in the real world, and its structure and elements. Then we’ll start a modeled writing all together in class. This will be kept in their binder as an example exceeding inform writing along with their rubric. Reading: We concluded our first novel study with the test last week. This week we are starting a new nonfiction unit in reading that will include text structure. Students will take notes on the various types of text structures, these will be posted to the class website. In this unit, students will be analyzing a biography on either Henry Ford, Amelia Earhart, or Thomas Edison. We will use these books, along with graphic novels, newspapers, and nonfiction articles, to study all the different types of text structures (will have list by tomorrow in binder) and compare/contrast these text structures. Sixth graders will also be learning how to analyze a text to determine if it is biased or unbiased. If you would like extra practice for your child at home, on the Launchpad website https://launchpad.classlink.com/fcs there is a link for i-Ready, your child may use this link for i-Ready for additional reading at home. Please monitor your child’s monthly Book Log. Students are required to read two, 150 page books in October. The Book Log should be signed by a parent, and it, along with the completed book review, are due Wednesday, October 31. It will only be accepted if signed by parent so we can make sure the book was read and finished at home.
