Important Dates: Oct. 15-31 – Socktober (Bring in a pair of new socks to give to those less fortunate) So far, we’ve had a lot brought in!! Let’s keep it up! Oct. 22-26 – IOWA testing grades 3 & 5 Oct. 31 – Book log due Oct. 31 – 1920’s day for 5th Grade (kids can wear 1920’s costumes) November 13th Jekyll parent meeting from 6-6:30 in the cafeteria. Grammar: This week we will finish our unit on Conjunctions and Interjections unit and test next Tuesday. Students have learned the 3 types of conjunctions (coordinating, correlative, and subordinating), review the types of sentences (simple, compound, and complex), and apply the different conjunction to the appropriate uses within those sentences. This week we will review subordinating conjunctions, the types of sentences, and interjections. I have posted a list of each type of conjunction on the class website. Students will have notes in their binders as well as their grammar notebooks. Spelling: List 4 came home with your children. The quiz for list 4 will be in next week on Wednesday, due to IOWA testing. Their lists should stay in their binders through the school year. Remember to study both the spelling and the definitions. If you would like for your child to have extra practice with their spelling words, they may use Spelling City website. https://www.spellingcity.com/users/bfhogan5 Writing: We have started our informational genre by exploring what it is, where/how we use it in the real world, and its structure and elements. We will begin a practice informational writing together which will highlight how to write a thesis in an introduction, how to cite a source, how to state evidence to support a thesis, how to explain evidence, and how to develop a conclusion. This will be kept in their binder as an example exceeding inform writing along with their rubric. Reading: We have started a new nonfiction unit in reading that will include text structure. Students will take notes on the various types of text structures, these notes will be posted to the class website. We will practice reading passages and determining the text structure used by looking for key words. In this unit, students will also be analyzing a biography on either Henry Ford, Amelia Earhart, Marie Curie, Candy Bombers, or Thomas Edison. As they read each chapter, they’ll be learning how to take notes using a guide called Cornell Notes (these will be in their yellow folders and can be used as a study guide). We will use these books, along with graphic novels, newspapers, and nonfiction articles, to study all the different types of text structures (will have list by tomorrow in binder) and compare/contrast these text structures. Sixth graders will also be learning how to analyze a text to determine if it is biased or unbiased. This week students will begin their newspaper project. Students will be comparing/contrasting the two inventors or their inventions along with writing a chronological article, and a cause/effect article. These will be written here at school. Once completed, we will have Newspaper Day. More information will be coming home about this closer to the date. If you would like extra practice for your child at home, on the Launchpad website https://launchpad.classlink.com/fcs there is a link for i-Ready, your child may use this link for i-Ready for additional reading at home. Please monitor your child’s monthly Book Log. Students are required to read two, 150 page books in October. The Book Log should be signed by a parent, and it, along with the completed book review, are due Wednesday, October 31. It will only be accepted if signed by parent so we can make sure the book was read and finished at home.
