Third Grade News – Week of January 19-22, 2021
I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend! Welcome back Face to Face! I’m excited to see everyone after being out of school for a month. 😊 Purple CJ folders- Inside these folders you will find your child's schedule, the classroom expectations, a January calendar, and lined paper. The calendar is used for communication. If your child has a good day, they will receive a stamp daily. Teachers will use the stamps as a class reward system. If the teacher needs to communicate with the parent, the teacher will write in the specific dated box or on the lined paper. These should be coming home daily for you to check. Reading: Last week we started a new novel Because of Winn Dixie. We will continue to read 2 chapters about every day and students will be expected to answer questions regarding the book. We will study the characters in the story and how their actions contribute to the events in the story as well as theme. Students are getting a copy of the questions that cover each chapter. Grammar: Last week we introduced subject/verb agreement. Students have previously learned about subject/predicates and verbs. This week we will be introducing possessive nouns. We will focus on singular possessive nouns this week. A possessive noun is a noun that shows ownership. For example: The dog’s bone. The dog owns the bone and therefore you add an apostrophe and s after the word dog to show ownership of the bone. Another example: The book that belongs to the girl. This would be restated as- The girl’s book. Shark group: Last week we continued with prepositions. This week we will focus on prepositional phrases. A prepositional phrase is a group of words that begins with a preposition. Phonics: This week students will learn the prefix micro-. The meaning of the prefix micro- is extremely small. An example microphone- making a “small” voice loud. This Thursday, January 21, there will be a phonics test. This test will cover this week’s skill and the following: silent consonants; kn, wr, gn, mb, mn, st. Kn- k is silent as in knight, wr- w is silent as in wrist, gn- g is silent as in gnat, mb- b is silent as in comb, mn- n is silent as in hymn, st- t is silent as in listen. The prefixes re-, pre-, and mid-. Re- means to do again, example: reheat- heat again. Pre- means to do before, example: pretest-test before. Mid- means in between, example: midsummer-middle part of summer. Shark Group: This week students will be learning the suffixes -al and -ial. The meaning of these suffixes are relating to process or action. They change the root word to a noun. Examples: nation-national, politic-political, tutor-tutorial, industry-industrial. This Thursday, January 21, there will be a phonics test. This test will cover the following: -er and -or. Example: bake-baker, read-reader, travel-traveler, edit-editor, visit-visitor, act-actor. The following prefixes and suffixes: -en, under, pre, fore, uni, bi, tri, ful, and less. The suffix under-means below and gives a location. Pre-, and fore-, both meaning before, uni- (one), bi- (two), and tri- (three), -en shows an action, ful- means ful of, less means without. Writing: Last week students finished constructed response. We ended the week with a graded constructed response. This week we will begin our unit on opinion writing. We will focus this week on the introduction of an opinion essay
