For this unit, your child will be learning how to identify and use prepositional phrases (start with a preposition and end with an object). They will also need to be able to expand sentences by adding prepositional phrases. Sixth graders will need to be able to classify the phrases as adverbial or adjective phrases. Please see notes in Grammar Notebook. There will be a quiz this week. Spelling-List 4 was added to your child’s binder last week. The quiz for List 4 will be after Jekyll, on Wed. 11/15. If you feel your child needs more practice, all of their lists have been uploaded into the website spellingcity.com under Hogan. Writing: We are continuing our unit on informative writing. The students will practice highlighting articles/research for important evidence, organizing ideas to write an essay, and work on developing an informative conclusion. Reading: This week we’ll continue reading our Civil War novel either Shades of Gray, Charley Skedaddle, or Little Women depending on their reading level. For this book, they will keep their notes in their novel folder. This week we will practice identifying figurative language throughout the chapters we’ve read. We will continue to work on strategies to infer information in literature. We have passed out the November Book Log. For 5th graders, their class novel can count as one of their two November books if you choose. The Book Log should be signed by a parent, and it, along with the completed book review, are due Friday, December 1. It will only be accepted if signed by parent so we can make sure the book was read and finished at home. The 6th graders do not need to complete a Book Log or review this month. Their book will count for both November books.
