Third Grade News – Week of November 16-20, 2020
Thank you to all who sent in food for the Thanksgiving food drive!! It was a HUGE success! I know that all the food sent in will go to feed so many who are less fortunate. Purple CJ folders- Inside these folders you will find your child's schedule, the classroom expectations, an October calendar, and lined paper. The calendar is used for communication. If your child has a good day, they will receive a stamp daily. Teachers will use the stamps as a class reward system. If the teacher needs to communicate with the parent, the teacher will write in the specific dated box or on the lined paper. These should be coming home daily for you to check. Reading: We are continuing to work to find the main idea and supporting details in informational passages. We learned that rereading the first and last sentences of a passage can help us locate the main idea. Students will continue to alternate between the two standards of main idea and text features. We will use highlighters and Post-It notes to indicate evidence of the standards in our readings. We will continue to learn how to use text features in non-fiction books. These include maps, graphs, bold print, change in font or font color, headings, sub-headings, photographs, illustrations, captions, and all the features that we use to better understand non-fiction text. We will test both skills next month, more information on specific dates to come later. Grammar: This week we will wrap up our current grammar unit. This unit includes verb tenses (present, past, and future), helping verbs, and irregular verbs. All notes in their journal will help them study. The unit test on this material is Thursday, Nov. 19 prior to the Thanksgiving break. I am sending home an optional homework sheet today. I will continue to do this for this weekly. Again, it is optional, not mandatory, but it does help students work on skills learned at school. It also gives you an idea as well as to what they are working on. Shark group: Students have learned about progressive verbs, helping verbs, and linking verbs. All notes in their journals will help them study. They will also be learning about helping and linking verbs over the next two weeks. The unit test is on Thursday, Nov. 19 covering this material. I am sending home optional homework to help reinforce the skills they are learning at school. Again, it is optional, not mandatory. Phonics: This week students will be learning the vowel teams oo, ew, ui, ue. These vowel teams make the long u vowel sound. Examples: moon, blue, grew, juice Shark Group: This week we will cover the suffixes -er and -est. A suffix is an affix at the end of a root or base word. The suffixes changes the root word to a comparative/superlative adjective. Examples: happier, happiest. Writing: Last week we read two informational essays about pollution, this week we will practice writing an informational essay together. Our writing connects well with our reading this quarter. Students will be writing on a main topic with three big topics. Wednesday, students will have a writing test on Write Score. This will be given on the computer. It is extremely important that all iPads are fully charged, and students bring their keyboards with them. Write Score is a writing test that is formatted closely to the Milestone test and is a good practice. Dates to Remember: Nov. 20- Thankful for Reading Day, students may dress up as their favorite story book character or in their PJ’s and bring in their favorite book to read Nov. 23-27- Thanksgiving Break
