Third Grade News – Week of November 30-Dec. 4, 2020
I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving and was able to get some rest and relaxation. I most certainly did! Please remember to complete the survey for the second semester on whether your child will continue to be Face 2 Face or go virtual. The deadline to make the decision is Dec. 9. The link can be found on the Dolvin webpage and below. https://fultonschools.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1SlCTwRkD5mz8mp Purple CJ folders- Inside these folders you will find your child's schedule, the classroom expectations, an October calendar, and lined paper. The calendar is used for communication. If your child has a good day, they will receive a stamp daily. Teachers will use the stamps as a class reward system. If the teacher needs to communicate with the parent, the teacher will write in the specific dated box or on the lined paper. These should be coming home daily for you to check. Reading: This week we are going to practice some close reading skills. We will read passages and look for specific details as we read. We are also continuing to work to find the main idea and supporting details in informational passages. We learned that rereading the first and last sentences of a passage can help us locate the main idea. Students will continue to alternate between the two standards of main idea and text features. We will use highlighters and Post-It notes to indicate evidence of the standards in our readings. We will continue to learn how to use text features in non-fiction books. These include maps, graphs, bold print, change in font or font color, headings, sub-headings, photographs, illustrations, captions, and all the features that we use to better understand non-fiction text. We will test both skills next month, more information on specific dates to come later. Grammar: This week we start a new unit on adjectives and adverbs. We are starting with comparative and superlative adjectives. These adjectives are used to compare two things against each other adding -er and compare against more than 1 other thing using -est. There will be a test before the winter holidays, a more definite date will come soon. Shark group: This week we start our new unit on adjectives and adverbs. We will start with Adjective Order. When more than one adjective is used to describe something, all adjectives need to be placed in the correct order: number, opinion, size, age, shape, color, origin, material, purpose. Phonics: This week students will be learning silent consonants; kn, wr, gn, mb, mn, st. Kn- k is silent as in knight, wr- w is silent as in wrist, gn- g is silent as in gnat, mb- b is silent as in comb, mn- n is silent as in hymn, st- t is silent as in listen. Shark Group: This week we will cover the suffix under. A suffix is an affix at the end of a root or base word. The suffix under means below and gives a location. Writing: This week we will finish the informational writing we were writing as a whole class prior to Write Score. We will finish up on Tuesday and move on to a new informational writing on Wednesday. Students have studied explorers in Social Studies. They will be choosing an explorer of their choice to research and write about. We will have approximately two and half weeks to complete the research and writing to be turned in for a grade. Dates to Remember: 12/19-1/5 Winter Holiday break
