Note from Mrs. Morrill (in clinic): Is your child missing a jacket, scarf, mitten, etc.? If so, you might want to remind them to check out the lost and found by the clinic. All items left by Holidays will be donated to charity. Grammar: We have started our final grammar unit for this semester which will cover synonyms, antonyms, and homonyms (both homographs and homophones). They’ll also be learning how to read and answer analogies. There will be a unit test next week. Spelling-List 5 was added to your child’s binder last week. The quiz for List 5 will be this Thursday. If you feel your child needs more practice, all of their lists have been uploaded into the website: https://www.spellingcity.com/users/bfhogan5 Writing: We have started our next unit on opinion writing. This week we are going to work on how to brainstorm and choose a stance by making a pro/con chart. They’ll also be learning about counter-arguments this week. Next week, they’ll start working through the structure from beginning to end and will add an example to their Writer’s Notebooks as well as add the opinion rubric to their binders. Reading: This week we are starting a new nonfiction unit in reading that will include text structure. In this unit, students will be analyzing a biography on either Henry Ford & Amelia Earhart (5th grade) or Thomas Edison (6th grade). We will use these books, along with graphic novels, newspapers, and nonfiction articles, to study all the different types of text structures (will have list by tomorrow in binder) and compare/contrast these text structures. Sixth graders will also be learning how to analyze a text to determine if it is biased or unbiased. We have passed out the December Book Log. Both 5th and 6th graders will need to read 150-page or more book of their choice for this month. It is due next Tuesday, December 19.
