Grammar: We have concluded our unit on Prepositional Phrases. Tomorrow, we will start our final grammar unit for this semester which will cover synonyms, antonyms, and homonyms (both homographs and homophones). They’ll also be learning how to read and answer analogies. There will be a unit test before Winter Break. Spelling-List 5 was added to your child’s binder last week. The quiz for List 5 will be next week (Wednesday if all goes as planned….see their agendas for updates). If you feel your child needs more practice, all of their lists have been uploaded into the website spellingcity.com under Hogan. Writing: We have completed our unit on informative writing with an online Write Score test and by sharing our practice writing on SeeSaw. They have showed so much growth already this year so be sure to check them out! J Our next unit, and I apologize now, is on opinion writing. By the end of the unit, they’ll be able to convince you of anything so be ready! J This week we are going over the purpose, structure, and how to brainstorm and choose a stance by making a pro/con chart. They’ll also be learning about counter-arguments this week. Next week, they’ll start working through the structure from beginning to end and will add an example to their Writer’s Notebooks as well as add the opinion rubric to their binders. Reading: This week we’ll wrap up our Civil War novels (either Shades of Gray, Charlie Skedaddle, or Little Women depending on their reading level) with a novel summative. This week we will focus on themes of the novel and review how to write a response to literature essay. To help them study for the test, they can be sure they are done with their novel J, study their notes (5th grade) or questions (6th grade), study the story map in their yellow folders (they know what this is), and review the response to literature structure in their Reader’s Notebooks. We have passed out the December Book Log. Both 5th and 6th graders will need to read 150-page or more book of their choice for this month. It is due on Tuesday, December 19. The novel study test will be on Thursday, December 14.
