Third Grade News – Week of December 7-11, 2020
Please remember to complete the survey for the second semester on whether your child will continue to be Face 2 Face or go virtual. The deadline to make the decision is Dec. 9. The link can be found on the Dolvin webpage and below. https://fultonschools.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1SlCTwRkD5mz8mp Purple CJ folders- Inside these folders you will find your child's schedule, the classroom expectations, an October calendar, and lined paper. The calendar is used for communication. If your child has a good day, they will receive a stamp daily. Teachers will use the stamps as a class reward system. If the teacher needs to communicate with the parent, the teacher will write in the specific dated box or on the lined paper. These should be coming home daily for you to check. Reading: We will continue to focus on text features in non-fiction books. These include maps, graphs, bold print, change in font or font color, headings, sub-headings, photographs, illustrations, captions, and all the features that we use to better understand non-fiction text. Students will continue to alternate between the two standards of main idea and text features. There will be a test on text features Wednesday, Dec. 16. Grammar: Last week we started a new unit on adjectives and adverbs. We started with comparative and superlative adjectives. These adjectives are used to compare two things against each other adding -er and compare against more than 1 other thing using -est. This week we will learn about comparative and superlative adverbs. The test covering this unit will be on Thursday, Dec. 17. Shark group: Last week we started our new unit on adjectives and adverbs. We started with Adjective Order. When more than one adjective is used to describe something, all adjectives need to be placed in the correct order: number, opinion, size, age, shape, color, origin, material, purpose. This is a difficult concept; I would recommend studying notes daily to help with this concept. This week we will introduce relative adverbs. A relative adverb is an adverb that introduces an adjective clause and comes after the noun it describes. It answers where, when, and why. The test covering this unit will be on Thursday, Dec. 17. Phonics: This week we will continue with the same phonics skills, silent consonants; kn, wr, gn, mb, mn, st. Kn- k is silent as in knight, wr- w is silent as in wrist, gn- g is silent as in gnat, mb- b is silent as in comb, mn- n is silent as in hymn, st- t is silent as in listen. Shark Group: This week we will cover the suffixes y, ful, and less. A suffix is an affix at the end of a root or base word. The suffix -y means having/being like, -ful means ful of, and -less means without. Examples: wavy, hopeful, careless Writing: Last week students choose an explorer to write an informational essay on. Students have studied these specific explorers in Social Studies. They were provided the 4 Big Ideas that they are going to be answering within their essays. They started doing their research at the end of the week and will be creating a book with their essay. They will include text features in this book as well. Students will be sharing their books in class on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 17-18. We have a few special dress-up days that your children may want to participate in this month.
