This activity is optional, and it is not a party. If you choose to participate, please be sure to include enough valentines for each student in our homeroom class. There are 30 kids in the HOMEROOM class. Additionally, if you want to bring in a decorated bag or box to collect them in that is fine! You can also just send in a plastic bag for all of them, whatever is easiest. Spelling: Spelling list #7 quiz is tomorrow. Their lists should stay in their binders through the school year. Remember to study both the spelling and the definitions. If you would like for your child to have extra practice with their spelling words, they may use Spelling City website. https://www.spellingcity.com/users/bfhogan5 Grammar: We finished our verb unit last week. The next unit of focus will be on word play, which will include all context clues, prefixes, suffixes, root words, and multiple meaning words (like a vocabulary unit). Writing: We will begin reviewing all 3 previous genres of writing. We will be spending approximately two to three weeks on each genre, starting with narrative. This week we are reviewing the structure of narrative and the story elements within each part (beginning, middle and end). Reading: We will be taking the test Thursday on Dramatic Literature & Folk Lore. This week we will focus on myths, and we will compare/contrast characters in fables, myths, and folktales. There will not be a class novel for this unit, so for their February Book Logs, all students will need to read two chapter books of their choice and complete two book reviews. These will be due on Thursday, February 28. For sixth graders, one of these two books needs to be chosen from a selection of 6th grade texts in my classroom. Next week after the break, we will start our next unit which does involve a novel study. Your child will be coming home with their novels soon and these can be used for the March book review. If you would like extra practice for your child at home, visit the Launchpad website launchpad.fultonschools.org. There are many useful links available. One is a link for i-Ready. Your child may use this link for i-Ready for additional practice at home.
