All students came home today with information about the fun run. The class that has the most students log in tonight will receive ice cream with Mr. Maloy!!!! Coach Digital (Milestones Test Prep) In your child’s binder, there is a Coach Digital form with a website and log-in information listed. On this site, parents can access the Milestones Coach Test Prep book that you usually have to purchase for free. You can print out the book (has all subjects) for your child to do extra practice if you desire. Teachers will also be adding online practice and other materials they see are beneficial. Jekyll Reminder Don’t forget that if your child has food allergies or special food needs, you’ll need to contact Jekyll yourself in advance (if you haven’t done this yet, please do this week if possible because we are in our final couple of weeks of preparation). Contact information was in the packet sent home (if you e-mail them, please include my name on e-mail, too). Thanks! Spelling: Spelling list #8 came home today. The quiz will be in about two weeks. Their lists should stay in their binders through the school year. Remember to study both the spelling and the definitions. If you would like for your child to have extra practice with their spelling words, they may use Spelling City website. https://www.spellingcity.com/users/bfhogan5 Grammar: Last week we started a new unit called Word Play which will focus on vocabulary skills including prefixes, suffixes, root words, context clues, and multiple meaning words. They have a prefix/suffix/root list in their binder that they will need to have memorized for the quizzes/test. I have some games to help review at home under the links section on my website, then under language arts. The unit test will be in about two weeks. Writing: Last week we started reviewing all the genres for the Milestones. We’ll review the narrative genre for a couple of weeks, and then we’ll rotate through informational and opinion again. For narrative stories, we’ve started by reviewing the elements needed for an engaging story including character development, setting, dialogue, plot/conflict, resolution, and sometimes a theme. This week we’ll continue working on how to end an already started story (being sure to stick to same genre, setting, and point of view) and how to write just an introduction to an already started story. Reading: This week we started a new unit/novel on poetry. This week we’ll start reading and analyzing poems for rhyme scheme, figurative language, comprehension, tone, and theme. We’ll also start reading a new novel, either Out of the Dust or Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, both of which coincide with their social studies standards on the Great Depression. For this novel, they’ll be practicing their note-taking using the Cornell Notes strategy in their yellow novel folders (they can bring these home to study/finish as needed). This book can count toward their MARCH book log they’ll get next week (we won’t finish it until later March). They will have both a poetry unit test and a separate novel test at the end of the unit. For their February Book Logs due next Thursday, February 28, all students will need to read two chapter books of their choice and complete two book reviews. For sixth graders, one of these two books needs to be chosen from a selection of 6th grade texts in my classroom. If you would like extra practice for your child at home, visit the Launchpad website launchpad.fultonschools.org. There are many useful links available. One is a link for i-Ready. Your child may use this link for i-Ready for additional practice at home.
