This activity is optional, and it is not a party. If you choose to participate, please be sure to include enough valentines for each student in our homeroom class. There are 30 kids in the HOMEROOM class. I will email a list this week with names. Additionally, if you want to bring in a decorated bag or box to collect them in that is fine! You can also just send in a plastic bag for all of them, whatever is easiest. Spelling: Spelling list #7 came home last week. We will have the quiz on Friday. Their lists should stay in their binders through the school year. Remember to study both the spelling and the definitions. If you would like for your child to have extra practice with their spelling words, they may use Spelling City website. https://www.spellingcity.com/users/bfhogan5 Grammar: We will wrap up our unit on verbs and verb tense this Friday. This unit covers action verbs (direct objects and singular/plural spellings), linking verbs, helping verbs, verb phrases, subject-verb agreement, participles, and the 6 tenses (past, present, future, past-perfect, present-perfect, and future-perfect). These perfect tenses can be confusing, so please encourage your child to study. The 6th graders will also be learning about transitive/intransitive phrases, predicate nominatives, infinitives, and gerunds. Students have notes in their journals to help them study. Writing: We will begin reviewing all 3 previous genres of writing. We will be spending approximately two to three weeks on each genre, starting with narrative. This week we are reviewing the structure of narrative and the story elements within each part (beginning, middle and end). Reading: We are continuing the unit on reading that includes Dramatic Literature & Folk Lore. This week we’ll continue the structural elements, how to identify the story elements in a myth, characteristics, and story elements found in folklore (including legends, folk tales, myths, tall tales, fables, and fairy tales). The test for this unit is tentatively scheduled for next Wednesday. There will not be a class novel for this unit, so for their February Book Logs, all students will need to read two chapter books of their choice and complete two book reviews. These will be due on Thursday, February 28. For sixth graders, one of these two books needs to be chosen from a selection of 6th grade texts in my classroom. If you would like extra practice for your child at home, visit the Launchpad website launchpad.fultonschools.org. There are many useful links available. One is a link for i-Ready. Your child may use this link for i-Ready for additional practice at home.
