February 5, 2018 Important Dates Wednesday, February 7- International Day Tuesday, February 13- Autry Mill Parent Night 6:00 Thursday, February 22- field trip On Valentine's Day we will be exchanging Valentine cards. Please be sure to include enough valentines for each student. There are 25 kids in the class and I have attached a list of all the names. Additionally, if you want to bring in a decorated bag or box to collect them in that is fine! You can also just send in a plastic bag for all of them whatever is easiest. On February 22, we will take a field trip to the Teaching Museum (in Roswell) for a WWII presentation. It is a great show, and the 5th graders always enjoy it. We need 2 parent chaperones per class to attend. You would need to be at Dolvin by 8:15, and we will return around 11:30. You must be approved as a volunteer by the county, to chaperone. Please let me know if you would be interested in helping out. Grammar: We will continue the unit on verbs and verb tense. This unit will cover action verbs (direct objects and singular/plural spellings), linking verbs, helping verbs, verb phrases, subject-verb agreement, participles, and the 6 tenses (past, present, future, past-perfect, present-perfect, and future-perfect). This week we’ll learn about subject/verb agreement, principal parts, and participles. The 6th graders will also be learning about transitive/intransitive phrases, and predicate nominatives/adjectives. There will be a unit test next Wednesday, 2/14. Writing: We are finishing our unit on opinion writing. Once this unit is complete, we will begin reviewing previous genres of writing. We will be spending approximately two to three weeks on each genre, starting with narrative. Reading: We have finished our unit on text structure. We will begin a unit on Folklore (fables, folktales, myths, and legends). Students will be reviewing what makes a folktale a folktale, attributes of all folklore, as well as the structure of dramatic literature. We will also be reviewing all of the story elements, theme, setting, characterization, conflict resolution, and in addition tone. The February book review has been passed out. Students will have this in their binder. Students will need to read TWO 150-page books on their level and this will be due on Wednesday, February 28th with parent signature. Six grade students will need to choose one of the two books from an assortment of 6th grade leveled novels in my classroom. Spelling: The new spelling list will be passed out on Wednesday. It will be in your child’s binder. The quiz will be in approximately two weeks. If you feel your child needs more practice, all of their lists have been uploaded into the website https://www.spellingcity.com/users/bfhogan5
