One unit we’ll work on between now and Milestones is our “Review” unit, and in this unit we’ll review all grammar standards we’ve learned this year (starting with conjunctions, prepositions, and interjections). This week we will review coordinating, correlative, and subordinating conjunctions, and we’ll also review the structure of a simple, compound, and complex sentence. We’ll also be starting our “Research” unit which will conclude after Milestones with the 5th grade Living Museum. We’ll start this unit by reviewing and using all the different types of reference materials (dictionary, thesaurus, atlas, almanac, encyclopedia, and online resources). Writing: We have finished learning about the three genres needed for 5th grade (narrative, informational, and opinion). So, we are now starting to review for Milestones by spending approximately two weeks on each genre. We started with narrative, and we assessed it with a classwork grade. This week we are starting to review the opinion genre. This week we’ll practice the opinion structure while having writing conferences on our previous summative (results coming home today). Next, we’ll start reviewing the informative writing genre’s purpose and structure. Reading: Last week we started a new unit on poetry. This week we’ll review the structural elements (stanzas, lines, rhyme scheme, and figurative language) and how to identify the story elements (POV, theme, and tone) in a poem. We’ll also start comparing and contrasting two poems and their topics/themes. The unit test will be toward the end of the month. There will be a class novel for this unit (either Out of the Dust or Roll of Thunder). Sixth graders will also be learning the difference between narrative and lyrical poetry as well as exploring odes, sonnets, epics, ballads, and iambic pentameter. For their March Book Logs, this class book can count for one of their two books. These will be due at the end of March. Sixth grade students will still need to choose one of the two books from an assortment of 6th grade leveled novels in my classroom. Spelling: We had our List 8 quiz last week in spelling. List 9 will coincide with their poetry standards and will be homework later this week. If you feel your child needs more practice, most of their lists have been uploaded into the website spellingcity.com.
