Grammar: This week we’ll finish our first review unit on conjunctions, interjections, and prepositions. We’re also starting our “Research” unit which will conclude after Milestones with the 5th grade Living Museum. We’ll start this unit by reviewing and using all the different types of reference materials (dictionary, thesaurus, atlas, almanac, encyclopedia, and online resources). Writing: We have finished learning about the three genres needed for 5th grade (narrative, informational, and opinion). So, we are now starting to review for Milestones by spending approximately two weeks on each genre. We started with narrative, and we assessed it with a classwork grade. We started reviewing the opinion genre. This week we’ll finish practicing the opinion structure. At the end of this week, we’ll start reviewing the informative writing genre’s purpose and structure. Reading: This week we are working on our poetry unit. Students will learn the structural elements (stanzas, lines, rhyme scheme, and figurative language) and how to identify the story elements (POV, theme, and tone) in a poem. We’ll also be comparing and contrasting two poems and their topics/themes. The unit test will be just before Milestones. There will be a class novel for this unit (Out of the Dust). March book logs are due March 30th. Students need to have read two, 150 page books, or one, 300+ page book (preapproved by me). Please remind your student to stay caught up on their reading. Book logs must be signed by parents. Spelling: Spelling List 9 will coincide with their poetry standards and came home today. If you feel your child needs more practice, they can visit https://www.spellingcity.com/users/bfhogan5. The test will be next week.
