Wednesday, March 7- Folklore test Thursday, March 8- Word Play test, Spelling list 8 quiz Friday, March 9 Digital Learning Day Digital Learning Day: Digital Learning Day is Friday, March 9, and on this day the kids will learn at home and not come to school. Your student has practiced what to do and all directions/assignments can be found on the Must Do/Can Do chart (it has all assignments on it for both blocks) posted in Google Classroom. On Friday, please do the following:
Grammar: This week we will conclude our unit called Word Play which will include all context clues, prefixes, suffixes, root words, and multiple meaning words (like a vocabulary unit). We will have a test Thursday. Please remember I have extra resources on my website. After the test, we’ll be starting two units. One unit we’ll work on between now and Milestones is our “Review” unit, and in this unit we’ll review all grammar standards we’ve learned this year (starting with conjunctions, prepositions, and interjections). We’ll also be starting our “Research” unit which will conclude after Milestones with the 5th grade Living Museum. We’ll start this unit by reviewing and using all the different types of reference materials (dictionary, thesaurus, atlas, almanac, encyclopedia, and online resources). Writing: We have finished learning about the three genres needed for 5th grade (narrative, informational, and opinion). So, we are now starting to review for Milestones by spending approximately two weeks on each genre. We are finishing our review of narrative this week. We will continue to reviewing, moving on to opinion. We will review the purpose and elements of an opinion writing. Reading: This week we will finish our unit on Dramatic Literature & Folklore (fables, folktales, myths, legends, etc.). The unit test is Wednesday. Students will be reviewing the attributes and structure of all folklore, as well as the structure of dramatic literature. We will also be reviewing all the story elements including theme, setting, characterization, and conflict/resolution to myths. After Folklore, we will start a new unit on poetry. We’ll learn the structural elements (stanzas, lines, rhyme scheme, and figurative language) and how to identify the story elements (POV, theme, and tone) in a poem. We’ll also be comparing and contrasting two poems and their topics/themes. The unit test will be toward the end of the month. There will be a class novel for this unit (either Out of the Dust or Roll of Thunder). For their March Book Logs, this class book can count for one of their two books. The March book review has been passed out. Students have this in their binder. Students will need to read TWO 150-page books on their level and this will be due on Friday, March 30th with parent signature. Six grade students will need to choose one of the two books from an assortment of 6th grade leveled novels in my classroom. Spelling: List 8 were passed out last week. The quiz is this Thursday. If you feel your child needs more practice, all of their lists have been uploaded into the website https://www.spellingcity.com/users/bfhogan5
