Parents- PLEASE make sure you are signing your child’s agenda daily. Homework along with teacher notes are here daily. Thank you for your support! Important Dates Tuesday, April 30 April Book log due Friday, May 3 Spring Family Fun Night Monday, May 6-9 BOGO Book Fair (students will be going in their PM block) Monday, May 6-10 4th Grade Milestone Testing Wednesday, May 22 class party Thursday, May 23 5th Grade Ceremony 1:00-1:45, final walk right after iReady- Students should be completing at least 45 minutes of iReady-per subject each week. This can be a combination of at home and at school. If we assign it for homework, please help by encouraging your student to complete their iReady lessons. Grammar: We continue to review all the grammar units from the year. Conjunctions, prepositions, interjections, synonyms/antonyms, homophones/homographs, context clues, multiple meaning words, prefix/suffix, verb tense, commas/quotes. We have split this up into 3 units, with a classwork and quiz along the way. This week we will focus on reviewing prefix, suffix, root words, context clues, and words with multiple meanings. Students will have notes in their binders and/or their grammar notebooks. This test is tentatively scheduled for May 7. Writing/Research: This week we’ll continue our Research unit which will conclude May 16 with the 5th Grade Living Museum (we’ll send parent time later as it nears). For this unit, we started by learning how to use different reference materials (dictionary, thesaurus, atlas, almanac, encyclopedia, and online/internet), and then last week we learned the steps of the research process including how to write a proper bibliography, and chose topics to research (based on their SS standards). Students will follow the research steps in creating their Living Museum projects. All of their work for the Living Museum will be mostly done at school except getting their costume together, a little extra research if needed, and practicing their speech. They will have a test at the end of the unit, this is tentatively scheduled for May 9. Reading: We are well into our novel study which correlates with their WWII standards. Students are really enjoying these books so far! They are reading either Number the Stars, Behind the Bedroom Wall, or Code Talkers. For this book, they will have reflection questions to answer for each chapter. These questions will be kept in their yellow novel folders and can be done for class work and then finished for homework (and studied for the test). For this book, we’ll review all of their literature standards (characterization, setting, conflict, resolution, tone, point of view, theme, comparison, and using direct quotes). Sixth graders will be reviewing symbolism and learning about the plot diagram. The test on this novel is tentatively scheduled for May 10. This book will count toward their May Log since we’ve just started it. For their April Book Logs, students will have to choose two 150-page books of their choice OR 1 300-page book. If your child has a question about a book of interest, please tell them to come see me. These will be due this Tuesday, April 30th with a parent signature. Students have this in their binder. Spelling: The last spelling list will be passed out this week. These lists will correlate to their WWII novel. Their lists should stay in their binders through the school year. Remember to study both the spelling and the definitions. If you would like for your child to have extra practice with their spelling words, they may use Spelling City website: https://www.spellingcity.com/users/bfhogan5
