Third Grade News – Week of September 16-20, 2019
Thank you so much for your generosity in contributing to our Boost for Bahamas cause! Your donations are greatly appreciated. Unfortunately, it looks like more bad weather might be on the way to them this weekend. The Book Fair was a huge success and I hope your children made some great selections. I look forward to seeing them reading and enjoying their new books. Last week we explored the Seven Mindsets lesson of Everything is Possible. We talked about how a small spark of creativity and imagination can lead to bigger ideas that may make a difference in our world. Reading: Last week we continued exploring different types of characters and settings in our readings. We have been analyzing how the character’s actions, feelings, and dialogue impact the plot and outcome of a story. This week we will be working with a new standard on comparing our own point of view to that of an author and discussing the author’s point of view in various stories. Grammar: We are working on singular, plural, and irregular plural nouns. Students are learning the rules for turning singular nouns into plural nouns and writing them correctly in sentences. Next week we will be working on possessive nouns. Please have them study the rules with plural nouns. These can be found on the class website or their grammar journals. Students completed their first spelling quiz Friday. This week they will begin spelling word sorts 7, 8, and 9. Please continue to use Spelling City as a resource for students to practice their spelling words. https://www.spellingcity.com/users/clarkkw Once on the website, they need to look on the left side for My Home Page and click there to find the lists for 3rd. The spelling lists are not in groups, so they will have to scroll through the list to find the current week’s words. Writing: We are continuing to work on writing personal narratives. Students have learned to identify and include the different parts of a narrative essay and have been practicing writing introductions with opening hooks. We will be working on how to write the body of the essay with a problem/solution. Homework: Reading 20 minutes a night, iReady 1 lesson a day, and a Point of View worksheet will be sent home on Tuesday and due on Friday.
