Parents,
I hope you all had a nice weekend! As a reminder, please make sure to check and initial your child’s agenda daily. Sometimes notes come and you are also aware of your child’s homework. This week we’ll start a new unit on Conjunctions & Interjections. For this unit, they’ll need to learn about coordinating, correlative, and subordinating conjunctions, as well as when/how to use them in simple, compound, or complex sentences (6th Grade will also learn about compound-complex sentence structure). We’ll have a unit summative test after Columbus Day. Writing: Last week we concluded our unit on how to develop a narrative writing. This week we will be working on a type of writing called Response to Literature which will be assessed on their novel test next week. This type of writing is when they receive a prompt that pertains to their current novel and have to respond in a formal structure that includes evidence from novel. We’ll be copying an outline of the structure and practicing this Thursday, Friday, and Next Monday. Reading: This week we are finishing our first novel which is either Old Yeller, Island of the Blue Dolphin, or Call of the Wild depending on your child’s reading level. This week we will learn about common themes in a story and how to write a response to literature. Also, don’t forget to ask your child about the requirements off the monthly Book Log (should be in their binders-new one for September was passed out). The Book Log should be signed by a parent, and it, along with the completed book review, are due Friday, September 29. It will only be accepted if signed by parent so we can make sure the book was read and finished at home. Our class is in need of individually wrapped candy. Any donations would be greatly appreciated J
