Thursday, Sept. 6- Sign and return papers come home Friday, Sept. 7- Box Tops due Book Fair- Friday, Sept. 7-14 Monday, Sept. 10- The class will go to the book fair to purchase as a whole group Oct. 4, 5, & 8- No school for students Grammar: We have begun working on our commas and quotes unit. We started the unit and will cover all the comma rules (items in a series, direct address, in an address, in friendly letters, in dates, between city/state, compound sentences, with an appositive, and after introductory word/phrase). Next week, we’ll learn all the rules for writing quotations different ways (whether direct quote or divided quote). We’ll have a unit summative test in about two weeks. Spelling: This week students will be getting List 2. There will be a quiz in two weeks. Please keep in mind, these lists need to stay in your child’s binder all year. If you would like for your child to have extra practice with their spelling words, they may use Spelling City website. https://www.spellingcity.com/users/bfhogan5 Writing: We are currently studying the narrative genre. This week we will continue to work on techniques to develop a good introduction including character development, setting development, placement of the conflict, and use transitions words in our writing. We will also work with plot development by using different plot techniques. Reading: This week we are continuing to read our first novel which is either Old Yeller, Island of the Blue Dolphin, or Call of the Wild depending on your child’s reading level. We will begin to learn about figurative language and apply these skills to our novel study. The September book review will be coming home this week. The Book Log should be signed by a parent, along with the completed book review, and are due Friday, September 28. It will only be accepted if signed by parent so we can make sure the book was read and finished at home.
