You will receive a reminder a few days before the conference. Please remember we need to meet with all homeroom parents before mid-October. Important Dates: Friday, September 8-Jekyll Form & First Payment Due Thursday, September 14-Book Fair Buying For Hogan Homeroom Friday, September 29- September Book Log Due Spelling: We started spelling list 1 last week (should be in your child’s binder). This week we will practice these words for homework, and we will have our first quiz next week. Grammar: We have started our Commas & Quotes unit by reviewing all the previously learned rules of commas (dates, city/state, in greeting/closing of letters, compound sentences, and complex sentences). Last week we learned the 5th grade rules including using to set off a direct address, with an appositive, and after introductory word/phrase. This week we’ll also start to learn all the rules for writing quotations different ways (whether direct quote or divided quote). We’ll have a unit summative test at the end of the unit. Writing: Last week we started working on adding style and clarity to our narratives by adding in transitions, vivid verbs, and specific nouns. We’ll continue to practice these techniques this week as well as learn about different plot techniques we can use in our narratives, such as foreshadowing, tension, sequential order, flashback, and suspense. Reading: This week we are continuing to read our first novel which is either Old Yeller, Island of the Blue Dolphin, or Call of the Wild depending on your child’s reading level. This week we will learn about point of view (1st person, 2nd person, 3rd limited, and 3rd omniscient) and figurative language and also apply these skills to our novel study. Also, don’t forget to ask your child about the requirements off the monthly Book Log (should be in their binders-new one for September will be passed out tomorrow). The Book Log should be signed by a parent, and it, along with the completed book review, are due Friday, September 29. It will only be accepted if signed by parent so we can make sure the book was read and finished at home.
