Third Grade News – Week of February 22-26, 2021
Don’t forget this Wednesday is picture day. Individual pictures only! Purple CJ folders- Inside these folders you will find your child's schedule, the classroom expectations, a January calendar, and lined paper. The calendar is used for communication. If your child has a good day, they will receive a stamp daily. Teachers will use the stamps as a class reward system. If the teacher needs to communicate with the parent, the teacher will write in the specific dated box or on the lined paper. These should be coming home daily for you to check. Reading: Last week we continued to practice comparing and contrasting the themes, settings, and plots of stories written by the same author about the same or similar characters (e.g., in books from a series). Students compared/contrasted the stories by the same author using the same character. This week we will continue to compare/contrast short stories written by the same author including the same character. Students will be expected to locate the evidence in the passages and it will be taken for a grade this week. Shark Group: Students were introduced to primary and secondary sources last week. They will be comparing and contrasting information on the same subject/topic presented with primary and secondary sources. Students have notes in their reading journals. Last week they looked at various sources and did a cut/paste activity. This week they will be reading various articles that will include first and secondhand sources. Students will have to compare and contrast the information between the two sources. Grammar: This week we will be reviewing pronouns. Students will be bringing home some worksheets for an optional homework to be used as review. These will come home on Monday with your child in their purple folder. The test will cover pronouns and pronoun antecedents. The test will be on Thursday, Feb. 22. Shark group: This week we will be reviewing pronouns. Phonics: The phonics skill this week is the suffix -ish. It means-sort of, somewhat, similar to and changes a noun into an adjective. Examples: feverish, 6ish, youngish. Shark Group: The phonics skill this week is the suffix -scope. It means-an instrument used for viewing. Examples: telescope, microscope, stethoscope Writing: This week students will begin to write their first opinion piece using an article on pollution. Students will go through the entire writing process forming their opinion, finding their reasons and evidence to support their reasons from the article.
